AAPI-Charitable Foundation Clinic in Cochin

AAPI-Charitable Foundation Clinic in Cochin, was started during the Indo-US summit meeting, in Cochin Jan 2, 2013.

AAPI foundation & AKMG jointly supported Amrita Peripheral clinic in Pannangad, Kochi. This clinic was originally established by Dr. Gopalakrishnan as a family trust for the welfare of the local population, about 20,000 people. A 3,000 square foot building was donated by Dr. GopalaKrishnan for the clinic.

The clinic is supervised by a Trust administrator. It has 2 exam rooms, 2 physician offices, an observation room, a lab, medical records room, reception waiting area, and parking facilities etc. Outpatient clinic visits are about 60 patients/day. The clinic also provides free medicines up to 5 days, free for their patients. Patients requiring hospitalization are referred to Amrita hospital or one of the other nearby hospitals.

There are 3 sources of income for the clinic:

1. Dr. Gopalakrishnan's charitable trust spends about 4 lakhs rupees a year (3 lakhs given directly to Amrita hospital for their expenses, and 1 lakh for the maintenance of the clinic building and salary for the trustee administrator) Trust has an endowment fund of 40 lakhs rupees with an annual income between 3 to 4 lakhs. The Trust has 3 trustees, an office administrator and an accountant.
2. Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences (AIMS) provides 2 full time M.D.s of family practice, one ObGyn specialist, and frequent free medical camps. They provide their salary and benefits. There are 3 M.D.s; 2 registered nurses, one lab technician, one receptionist, one coordinator, housekeeper, and an ambulance driver. Amrita spends about 6 lakhs rupees a year.
3. Income from the clinic. Clinic is free for poor people. Those below the poverty level receive free consultations and also free major admissions or surgery done at the parent hospital. Patients who are able to pay are charged an office visit of 50 rupees, which is good for 3 months. They also get 3 days of free medicine (average office visit in Kerala now is 200 rupees). The clinic also provides a full lab services and ambulance service for emergencies. The average income from the clinic is about 20,000 rupees a month. The total expenses for the clinic yearly is about 10 lakhs rupees and income of about Rs1 lakh.
Besides providing guidance and technical support AAPI-Charitable Foundation shares part of the expenses to run this clinic. Gopalakrishnan's trust is run by the AIMS institution and university which is a renowned hospital in Kerala. Students from many foreign countries come for training. Majority of the staff are US or UK trained doctors. This is a great place for AAPI members or their children to go for training. Hospital has excellent guest houses for foreign students. This is also the lowest cost hospital and services are free for poor people.

Operation and Funding Sources: Clinic is operated by AIMS, a non-profit charitable institution with 1800 beds. It has medical, dental, nursing school with postgraduate courses in all medical specialties and operates as a specialty hospital. They have appointed a medical director and a coordinator for this clinic as a part of the department of community medicine.

On 9/22/13 a large free eye and dental camp was conducted by the clinic. Over 200 patients received free consultations, medicines, eye glasses and cataract surgery.
